HANG THE DJ
Georg Steidinger l HANG THE DJ
Blue neon lettering made from hand-blown glass tubes, power supply mounted on a white plastic panel (can also be installed directly on the wall) – 100x30 cm.“Hang The DJ” is a statement, a striking and provocative artwork that captivates with its vibrant colors and clear message. The installation consists of hand-blown neon tubes that display the words “Hang The DJ” in bold, contrasting shades of blue. The use of neon tubes gives the piece a modern, urban aesthetic reminiscent of city billboards. DJs—our superheroes and gatekeepers of musical trends—create, curate, filter, and censor. As such, they are all-powerful but not infallible. The message itself is a critique of the music industry and an expression of rebellion and nonconformity, themes also explored by the band The Smiths in their 1986 song "Panic." In "Panic," they lament the dire state of contemporary pop music and urge listeners, in retaliation, to “burn down the disco” and “hang the DJ.”
